Review by Sherri Allen:
A little boy learns a valuable lesson about patience in Sarah McMenemy's new picturebook, Jack's New Boat. Jack visits his uncle, a sailor, who gives him a brand new toy boat. Jack is excited to sail his little boat, but the weather just won't cooperate. Jack grows more impatient every day until he finally runs to the shore and launches his boat, without waiting for his uncle's okay. Big waves carry Jack's boat out to sea until it disappears. An unhappy Jack and his uncle search for the boat, but they don't find it, leading Jack to realize he may never see his boat again.
Jack's New Boat succeeds in imparting its wisdom without being upsetting. Full of blue, green and gold tones associated with the seaside, the pictures are soothing and calm. Even when the waves are taking Jack's boat, the pictures are neither scary nor threatening. Jack's uncle is supportive when he realizes Jack put his boat in the water too soon and has lost it. He comforts Jack and helps him search for his boat instead of getting mad at him for losing it. The story even ends on a happy note, when Jack finds his boat after coming to understand the potential consequences of being impatient. Jack's New Boat is a wonderful book for gently introducing young children to the concept of patience.
