Review by Sherri Allen:
Learning letters and numbers is fun with a cast of quirky characters along to help. The latest DVDs from the Preschool Prep Series, Meet the Letters and Meet the Numbers, introduce babies and young children to these important early concepts in a fun and creative way.
In Meet the Letters, all the letters of the alphabet are presented one at a time, first in lowercase, then uppercase. When a letter is initially introduced, it's just a black text letter. Next, it fills with color and turns into an animated character. Then, to reinforce letter recognition, the character turns back into a colored letter, then a black text letter. As each letter is displayed on the screen, a woman's voice repeatedly says the name of that letter. When a letter is in "character," the name of the letter is stated by a childlike character's voice. Of course, no study of the letters would be complete without the "Alphabet Song" and the letter characters treat their viewers to a charming rendition at the end.
Starting with 0 and ending with 10, Meet the Numbers follows the same formula; black text number, followed by colored number and animated number, then back to colored number and, finally, black text. The "soundtrack" also follows the same formula, with a woman and the characters stating the names of the numbers as they appear. Meet the Numbers, however, teaches more than just number recognition. After the initial "introductions" of the numbers, the numbers are all presented in series with a corresponding number of objects, which are counted by the woman's voice, helping children learn to count and to grasp the concept of numbers.
Designed to teach babies and toddlers while they are learning to talk, Meet the Letters and Meet the Numbers will captivate your little ones. These DVDs will also be great for anyone whose children are a little older but haven't yet learned to recognize all the letters (in both cases) and numbers. They won't be able to resist the educational charms of the adorable characters.
